The demand for 1-litre internal combustion engine cars has doubled

The demand for cars with 1-litre internal combustion engine doubled in August compared to the same period last year, according to Moller Auto's sales data in the Baltics. Car experts explain that people are probably increasingly looking for mobility solutions that save money and are more environmentally friendly.

According to Moller Auto, interest in cars with a one-litre internal combustion engine has increased since 2019. If you look at the last three years, last year saw the highest demand, in 2021 sales in this car segment were more than five times higher than in 2020.

Looking at the best-selling 1-litre internal combustion engine car models in the Baltics this year, the most popular new cars are Volkswagen T-Cross and Volkswagen Taigo, followed by Volkswagen Golf and Audi A3. The most popular used cars are Volkswagen T-Cross, Skoda Octavia, Volkswagen Golf and Volkswagen Polo.

Izīda Gerkena, Baltic Managing Director of Moller Auto Group, notes that the development of the internal combustion engine has also contributed to the gradual "revival" of the 1-litre internal combustion engine car category, which is now also stimulated by economic and environmental factors.

"The one-litre engine is convenient for everyday use and has two very important advantages, namely financial savings and lower CO2 emissions. I believe that the choice for a car with a one-litre engine is a trend that we will continue to see in the future. People are increasingly looking for solutions that affect the environment less and are also economical. This is especially important for many drivers because we are at the crossroads of various crises," explains Izīda Gerkena.

According to Moller Auto experts, the fuel consumption of cars with 1-litre internal combustion engine is low from an economic point of view - 4.2 litres per 100 kilometres. In addition, it is a convenient means of transportation for many drivers, being dynamic not only in urban areas, but also on highways. For example, the Volkswagen T-Cross is equipped with a 95-horsepower engine, which is powerful enough for comfortable movement on highways.

"Of course, over time we have heard prejudices and myths about vehicles with a 1-litre internal combustion engine, mostly about power or long-term durability. Today, however, these myths are a thing of the past. Yes, these cars are designed for people with certain driving habits and needs, but this can be said for any car. It should also be added that no car will last long if it is not maintained regularly," adds Izīda Gerkena.
